Main Task: Double Page Spread Textual Analysis

The colour scheme used for Mixmag’s double page spread is very simple. This is good as it won’t bombard the reader into looking at too much going on. Keeping it simple looks better as it connotes professionalism and a very modern and contemporary look. The colours used matches the front cover and contents page, I think they have stuck to using the colours black, white and yellow to make the magazine look very in sync with each page and so it looks like presentation has really been thought about. The background colour is black, this which looks very slick and sharp. The black background also goes really well with the images used, as they are very low key.

The images used for the double page spread is different compared to the usual double page spread, which consists of one large image that takes up a whole page or the main picture bleeding between the two pages. But on the Mixmag’s double page they have taken a variety of photos of Calvin Harris but from different angles so that they don’t look the same. All the images are very similar though, they are all low-key, and have a very shadowy effect on the main subject. There have also been flames added to the background of the images to link onto the main image one the front cover.

The subjects name is positioned at the top left corner of the corner of the page, in a very simple font. The subjects name is written in quite small font, but it still stands out because it’s away from the other text. The text is written in a question-answer style. I think this works because it is more interested in reading then to read just a block of text which can be quite boring.

There is a quote from Calvin Harris, which stands out because it’s in another colour font to the text. It also stands out because it’s positioned away from the other text and the quote is in much bigger font then the other text. The stand-first connotes that it’s the start of the article; the drop capital is in a different font then the rest of the text. The font used is very modern and eye-catching it also matches the theme of the magazine.

This magazine double page spread fits over 3 double pages, so the page I’m analysing was the second page as the first one was only an introduction with the heading and a brief introduction about Calvin Harris. Also the by-line is on the first part of the double page spread. The title of the double page spread is called ‘playing with fire’ this title relates so much to the images used for this double page spread.
